Authorities are currently investigating the cause of a fire that severely damaged an apartment complex in Fort Worth and sent two people to the hospital this week.

Roughly 60 people were left without an apartment to return to that night and had to find other accommodations.

First responders received calls around 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday about the blaze, and according to a statement posted on social media by the Fort Worth Fire Department, when firefighters arrived at Handley Oaks Apartments in the 2100 block of Handley Drive, they saw “heavy fire,” which had spread to multiple units.

“Firefighters immediately began to battle the blaze. They also assisted one of two patients to safety where they started emergency medical care. The two adult patients were transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation. The fire reached two alarms before it was brought under control,” the department said.

Some 13 residential units were affected by the fire, and the American Red Cross Greater North Texas began working to help the residents who could not return to their apartments.

Video footage of the apartment complex fire was shared on social media outlets such as X, with Keenan Willard of NBC 5 DFW posting, “LATEST: Video shows the flames pouring out of a bottom floor window at this Fort Worth apartment fire. Neighbors say an older man lived in that unit and he escaped just as the fire enveloped his home.”

The apartment fire came on the heels of another 2-alarm blaze that started in an abandoned building on the northeast corner of East Long Avenue and Deen Road, according to the Fort Worth Fire Department.
