Locals from across North Texas packed a sexually explicit drag brunch Saturday afternoon.
Twisted Bar and Grill in The Colony hosted another iteration of its “Twisted & Turnt Drag Brunch” that day. This 21 and up event took place from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.
As previously reported by The Dallas Express, all-ages drag shows drew scrutiny and protests around the metroplex and other parts of Texas in the last few years. Drag has also spurred allegations of being inherently “derisive, divisive and demoralizing misogyny,” a sentiment West Texas A&M University president Walter Wendler expressed when he canceled a drag show on the campus in March of last year.
Guests who packed the bar on Saturday were served brunch items and alcoholic drinks and enjoyed hookahs before the start of the drag show, which kicked off just after 1 p.m.
Drag queens, including Ashley Davenport, Barbie Davenport Dupree, Adecia Lush, and Daphne Rio St. James, came out in succession, dancing provocatively in front of and interacting with patrons as the latter cheered and handed out tips. Fitness model Kyle Steele also performed at the show, scantily clad in a cowboy-inspired outfit.
One performance at the event involved a drag queen performing to an edited version of the 1990s song “Let’s Talk About Sex,” during which an actual sex toy was used as a prop. Another performer’s outfit was inspired by Miss Trunchbull from the 1996 movie Matilda.
Guests were invited to play a trivia game about pop culture and history between performances. Patrons who were celebrating birthdays, upcoming weddings, and even divorces were also invited to participate in a contest that involved pretending to be a Disney character, such as Cinderella, Mulan, or Tiana, and faking an orgasm.
One female guest participated in a particularly explicit performance with Steele, who gave her a lap dance to the 1996 song “Pony.”
The owners of Twisted Bar and Grill refused to go on record and would not identify themselves for this article.
