The Dallas Stars announced on Thursday that they have acquired Mathias Emilio Pettersen from the Calgary Flames ahead of Friday’s trade deadline.

The Stars will send Riley Damiani to the Flames as part of the trade, as reported by the Dallas Stars. Damiani is also a prospect and has played with the Texas Stars this season, recording 23 points in 53 games. Damiani was a fifth-round selection in the 2018 NHL draft.

Pettersen brings added skill to the Stars and ranks second in assists and fourth in scoring among AHL teams. He has recorded 30 points in 53 games playing with the Flames’ affiliate team, the Calgary Wranglers.

The Stars have been largely quiet during the trade period but managed to snag a top defenseman in Chris Tanev, as reported by The Dallas Express. The trade was a three-part deal that saw Tanev taken by Calgary from the New Jersey Devils. Tanev was then sent to Dallas in exchange for draft picks. The Stars also acquired unsigned goalie Cole Brady as part of the deal.

“We are fortunate to have the opportunity to add a player of Chris’ caliber to our team,” Stars general manager Jim Nill said in a press release. “He is a proven defenseman with postseason experience that is comfortable in all situations on the ice.”

Tanev has yet to officially join the Stars blue line despite being available during Tuesday’s 7-6 win over the San Jose Sharks. Tanev may see his first action on the ice on Friday as the Stars take on the Anaheim Ducks.

Nill said the Stars did not need a big trade deal.

“We have internal options that are better than any other trade we could have made. Logan Stankoven is an example of that,” Nill said, according to a post by Stars radio host Bruce LeVine.

The Stars will look for a season sweep of Anaheim on Friday evening. They earned two one-goal victories over the Ducks early in the season and are in the Bay Area for the late game. Dallas continues to lead the Central Division and holds a two-point advantage over the Jets. The Stars are still four points behind the Western Conference-leading Vancouver Canucks. The Ducks are well back in the Pacific Division. Puck-drop is at 9 p.m. CT.
