The Oct. 18 Mesquite City Council meeting saw the administration of the Oath of Office to Police Chief David Gill. According to a news release by the city council, Secretary Sonja Land administered the Oath of Office to the police chief.
Present at the meeting was City Manager Cliff Keheley, who said that the appointment of a police chief is a significant moment in any community.
“This position leads the men and women of the department, but they are a leader in our community,” he said. Keheley further stated that Gill is the right person for the job as he has a good knowledge of Mesquite and thus, knows what needs to be done and how to lead it.
Police Chief Gill has served in the Mesquite Police Department for twenty-seven years, joining the police force in January 1994. Over these years he served in all areas of the department, both as a supervisor and an officer. Gill has thirty-four department honors throughout his time in service.
Gill’s career at the police department had him serve thirteen years in command-level positions, including leadership of the department’s Tactical Division, and served as a Field Training Officer. His department honors include three Life Saving Awards and two Certificates of Merit.
In regards to education, Gill holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from Midwestern State University. He graduated as a Distinguished Honors Graduate from the Criminal Justice College. He is currently completing his Master of Science in Law Enforcement Management and Leadership at Sam Houston State University.
Per the news release, Gill is an active member of the community who holds the role of a deacon in his church.
