The city of Carrollton is inviting local artists to participate in a new city cleanup and beautification project.

The city announced on January 2 that it is seeking local artists for its Storm Drain Art Contest. This contest will allow seven artists to show off their work while raising awareness to prevent stormwater pollution.

Participants are offered the opportunity to paint an original design on one of Downtown Carrollton’s storm drain inlets. The city asks that these paintings be themed around the conservation of natural water sources and habitats, pollution prevention, and the protection of safe drinking water sources.

“Each time it rains, water flows through the streets and can pick up pollutants including sediment, trash and litter, or oil and vehicle fluid on its way to the storm drains. These pollutants discharge directly into creeks and surface water throughout the City, flowing into the Elm Fork of the Trinity River,” read the city’s announcement.

“Painting the storm drains will not only be a colorful art installation for the community to enjoy, but a reminder for everyone to help protect the water supply and the environment.”

Participants from the city and the immediate DFW area must submit photos of their work for committee consideration. The original submissions must be appropriate for all ages, not resemble graffiti-style art, and cannot be used for advertisement.

Seven winning artists will be notified, and their art will be installed in March.

“Art supplies such as environmentally friendly acrylic paint, brushes, and mixing containers will be provided to artists, as well as safety equipment such as cones, vests, knee pads, and shade cover. City staff will prep the inlets by power washing and applying a primer, then applying a sealant afterward to preserve the artwork for years to come,” read the city’s announcement.

Winning artists can also sign their artwork and have their bio on the city’s website. The deadline for submission is January 15.
