Consumers are becoming more interested in driver-assisted vehicles, according to the Autonomous Vehicles: Consumer Trends and Attitudes Survey from Ghost Autonomy.
“Consumers are not just intrigued by autonomous driving, they are actively seeking it,” according to a news release. “Three in four consumers (77%) expressed a strong preference for fully autonomous driving over robotaxis, and one in two (52%) who have firsthand experience with self-driving vehicles would be willing to expedite their next car purchase if fully autonomy were available.”
Based in California, Ghost Autonomy has offices in Dallas, Detroit, and Sydney, Australia. Researchers found that Tesla owners have the highest rate of exposure to self-driving features.
The survey collected insights from more than 1,200 participants across diverse age groups, income levels, and regions.
“Autonomous driving is clearly the next frontier for the automotive industry as it evolves to meet consumer demand,” Ghost Autonomy CEO John Hayes said.
“The findings from our ‘Autonomous Vehicles: Consumer Trends and Attitudes Survey’ reveal that exposure to autonomous vehicles in the real world increases consumers’ inclination towards adopting it in their own cars. As drivers consider integrating this technology into their daily lives, it makes sense that they want to better understand its reliability and safety.”
Furthermore, prospective car buyers recognize the possible benefits of autonomous driving technology, according to the release, with 65% of respondents saying they would want autonomous driving in their cars in the next 10 years if the technology was proven to be safe.
The Ghost Autonomy report also found:
- Age is a factor in self-driving vehicle readiness. Nearly three out of four drivers between the ages of 21 and 29 (73%) and 69% of drivers between the ages 30 and 39 said they want fully autonomous driving in their cars in the next five years.
- Safety is a chief concern, with blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assistance, and emergency-swerve assistance the priority for car buyers.
- More than half of consumers (54%) said their interest in autonomy is motivated by their desire for easier commutes.
- Almost nine out of 10 Tesla owners (88%) want full autonomy in their next car.
