A local civilian rescued multiple puppies that had been abandoned on the side of a highway.

The Humane Society of North Texas reported on December 28 that a good Samaritan had been traveling down a highway in Fort Worth when he noticed someone “dumping” a box on the side of the road. The observer slowed his vehicle only to spot a puppy’s head peeking out of the box and the driver, who placed the box on the side of the highway, fleeing the scene.

This observer turned around to inspect the box and, upon opening it, discovered eight puppies left for dead inside. Photos reveal that the driver who fled had contained the eight black and brown puppies inside an opaque and dirty heavy-duty tote sealed with duct tape.

“It’s shocking and makes us sick to our stomachs to think about what could have very easily happened. These puppies owe their lives to that Good Samaritan who listened to his gut and knew something was wrong,” said the Humane Society of North Texas in its social media post.

This good Samaritan brought the puppies to the Humane Society of North Texas in Fort Worth. The organization asked that the community donate to cover medical expenses to prepare the puppies for adoption. Costs include flea/tick treatment, spay/neuter surgery, deworming, vaccinations, and placing the puppies in foster homes.

Since making the post, 132 citizens have donated to help the puppies, raising over $5,361. The organization also issued an update stating that the puppies have all been placed in foster homes.

The identity of the person who abandoned the puppies is currently unknown. Many citizens have since commented on this post seeking to find the individual responsible, with the Humane Society responding that it is possible that the person’s DNA was on the box, while others praised the person who stopped to rescue the pups.
