Dallas County residents will have a chance to vote on two critical offices in the coming year: sheriff and county tax assessor-collector.
While one plays a pivotal role in county-wide public safety, the other is charged with assessing the taxable value of all property in the county and can also establish the amount of tax due on a property based on a fair market value appraisal. The tax assessor-collector also provides most motor vehicle and registration services.
Five Democratic candidates will be on the primary election ballot in the coming months for the post of sheriff. That includes Incumbent Sheriff Marian Brown, along with former Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez, who left the office to run for governor in 2017.
John A. Ames, the incumbent county tax assessor-collector, will face off against Elaine Campbell in the primary election.
No Republicans are running for either role. Terms for both offices last four years.
The following candidates have been approved by the Texas Secretary of State to appear on the ballot for the Democratic party for the primary election on March 5. Early voting is set to kick off on February 20.
Candidates are listed in alphabetical order by last name where applicable.
