Two inmates are back in police custody after escaping from Fannin County jail last weekend.
Raymond Ross and Ramon Perez sparked a days-long manhunt after breaking out of the jail’s south annex in Bonham and slipping into the woods shortly after 9 p.m. on November 25, reported WFAA.
Both men were reportedly back in police custody by November 29 and will likely face additional charges.
As previously covered by The Dallas Express, Ross was initially arrested on charges of evading arrest with a motor vehicle, drug possession, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Perez was booked on a charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child.
Perez was the first escapee to be taken back into custody. He turned himself in to the Bryan County Sheriff’s Office in southern Oklahoma, where he currently awaits extradition back to Fannin County.
Ross’ capture was made possible by a driver phoning police to report that a man matching his description had tried to flag down his vehicle. All those living in the vicinity had been put on alert, with the Fannin County Texas Office of Emergency Management issuing warnings on social media. Bonham ISD also locked down its campuses.
The authorities combed through the area, capturing the fugitive sometime before 5 p.m. According to reports, he was found hiding under a bed inside an apartment at the Texoma Housing Authority Complex in Bonham.
In North Texas, the efforts of the Dallas Police Department to fight crime have been dampened by an ongoing officer shortage. Fewer than 3,200 officers patrol Dallas despite a prior City analysis advising a staffing level of around 4,000 officers would be appropriate.
This shortfall is seen in Downtown Dallas, which logs considerably more crime than Fort Worth’s downtown area. Fort Worth’s city center is patrolled by a special neighborhood police unit that works alongside private security guards.
