Dallas officials have canceled this year’s Veterans Day Parade, marking the second year in a row the parade has been canceled for inclement weather.
Greater Dallas’s Veterans Day Parade was initially scheduled for November 9 at Dallas City Hall Plaza, commencing at 11 a.m. The theme for the parade was “Proud to be American.”
According to the event website, the parade was scheduled to feature keynote speaker Lt. Gen. John Campbell of the United States Air Force, a Missing Man Formation military flyover, an oath of enlistment for 150 men and women, and more.
While North Texas saw a dry and sunny start to this week, a cold front was predicted to arrive on November 9, bringing with it much cooler temperatures, widespread rain, and chances for thunderstorms throughout the day, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.
In light of this forecast, the City of Dallas announced on November 8 that the parade had been canceled due to the potential of inclement weather. The parade had also been canceled last year for weather concerns, with civilians choosing to gather at an improvised event to celebrate service members, according to The Dallas Morning News.
Although there was a possibility of some isolated strong storms this year, the morning of November 9 came around with the chances for severe weather mostly dissipated.
Meteorologist Patricia Sanchez with the National Weather Service in Fort Worth confirmed in an interview early Thursday with The Dallas Express that it’s now more likely that the cloudy skies and light rain are all that’s in store for the day.
Dallas officials also announced on November 9 that City Council District 4 would be holding its own annual Veterans Day Parade on November 11 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The event will start at Cedar Crest Cathedral on 1616 E. Illinois Ave. before concluding at the vacant lot across from VA Hospital on 4515 S. Lancaster Road.
The weather forecast looks to be in favor of this day’s celebration, as Sanchez said the rain and storm chances are expected to clear by November 10, leaving only cloudy skies and cooler temperatures for the weekend.
