The City of Dallas will host its annual bike event, with this year’s honoree being Bike Friendly South Dallas, a local non-profit organization.
Partnering with Downtown Dallas Inc. (DDI) and local bicycle organizations, the City is gearing up for its annual Bike to City Hall event to be held at Dallas City Hall on November 8, according to a press release from the City.
“The event is held to promote cycling as an innovative and viable means of affordable transportation,” per the release.
Dallas City Council members Paul E. Ridley of District 14, Jesse Moreno of District 2, Chad West of District 1, and Adam Bazaldua of District 7 will join other bicyclists on a ride from Pacific Plaza to City Hall Plaza at 8 a.m.
DDI will provide light refreshments to participants prior to the ride, and officers from the Central Patrol Division will assist the bicyclists on the route, which is still under review, per the news release.
A press event will be held at City Hall Plaza at 8:15 a.m.
This year’s honoree is Bike Friendly South Dallas, a nonprofit organization credited with aiding the City in becoming more bike-friendly.
Bike Friendly South Dallas went from a hobby project in 2012 to a nonprofit organization in 2017 to address the community’s needs, often involving limited resources and transportation options.
“We are so very honored to receive this recognition from the City of Dallas,” said a representative of Bike Friendly South Dallas in an email to The Dallas Express. “They have been great allies in supporting our mission of advocating safe cycling as a viable method of transportation in South Dallas and beyond.”
Dallas officials have been working to improve bike infrastructure across the city for quite some time. Department of Transportation director Ghassan Khankarli and chief planner Kathryn Rush briefed Dallas council members last week on ways to make the city more bike-friendly, such as adding new bike lanes, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.
