Massive defense packages dedicated to Ukraine were announced last week even as a White House spokesperson noted its funding of Ukraine’s war effort would not be “indefinite.”

Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy traveled to NATO’s headquarters in Belgium last week where U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced the latest defense package for Ukraine, which was valued at up to $200 million. It is the 48th tranche of equipment to be provided to Ukraine by the Department of Defense (DoD) since August 2021, according to an announcement by the DoD.

“I’m proud that the United States will announce its latest security assistance package for Ukraine, valued at $200 million,” Austin said, per Radio Free Europe. According to Austin, the package will include air defense, rocket, and artillery ammunition, as well as anti-tank systems and other equipment.

The announcement came at the same time White House spokesperson John Kirby addressed the Biden administration’s use of taxpayer money to fund Ukraine during a press conference. Unprompted, Kirby pivoted while answering a question about how much aid the United States is authorized to give Israel without congressional action when he shifted to discussing Ukraine.

“You don’t want to be trying to bake in long-term support when you’re at the end of the rope,” Kirby said during the press conference.

“On the Ukraine funding, we’re coming near to the end of the rope. I mean today we announced $200 million and we’ll keep that aid going as long as we can, but it’s not going to be indefinite,” he added.

CNN reported that the needs of Israel could overwhelm the Pentagon’s ability to adequately supply two wars. At present, Ukraine and Israel require different weapons as the former is mostly fighting an artillery war of attrition, and the latter is using precision-guided weapons fired from the air.

However, should the anticipated ground invasion of Gaza commence and become prolonged, Israel’s ability to produce its own munitions may not be sufficient.

For now, a $1.1 billion arms package from Germany is supposed to help Ukraine get through the winter.

“With this new ‘winter package,’ we are further enhancing the readiness of the Ukrainian armed forces in the coming months,” said German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius about a package that will include a U.S.-made Patriot air defense system, two German IRIS-T air defense systems, 10 more Leopard tanks, and other equipment, per Zero Hedge.
