Summer-like temperatures are returning to North Texas, along with a chance for severe weather.

The National Weather Service in Fort Worth is predicting “unseasonably” hot temperatures across the metroplex this weekend. The high will reach 95 degrees on Friday, and the next day is expected to be even hotter. The forecasted high for Saturday is 97, with a heat index of 105.

“Think back to the summer and do normal heat preparations that we’d have to do,” said David Bonnette, lead meteorologist at the NWS in Fort Worth.

A “cold front” will arrive late Saturday or early Sunday, bringing an increased chance for rain and thunderstorms in the North Texas area.

“Late Saturday afternoon into the overnight, we’ll see some thunderstorms develop to the northwest,” said Bonnette.” I don’t think that they’ll hit us — at least in the metroplex — Saturday night.”

Thunderstorms will be more widespread across the metroplex on Sunday. Some of these storms could be strong to severe, with heavy rainfall and isolated flash flooding possible. In addition, the storms could generate damaging wind gusts and large hail.

The NWS advises area residents to monitor for weather updates as the weekend progresses.

Bonnette said more temperate conditions in the 80s and 90s would return next week.
