Former President Donald Trump raised more than $7 million for his campaign in the aftermath of his booking at a Georgia jail last week, according to a report.
The Trump campaign raised $7.1 million after the former president was booked Thursday in jail, where he had his mugshot taken, Politico reported. The campaign quickly began to sell merchandise of the mugshot with the caption “NEVER SURRENDER” displayed on shirts, posters, coffee mugs, and more, although Trump surrendered himself to Fulton County jail authorities.
Trump was arrested on more than a dozen felony charges in a racketeering and fraud cause that focuses on his alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election along with several of his political allies. The former president made his first tweet in more than two years Thursday night, posting a photo of his mugshot, captioned, “ELECTION INTERFERENCE NEVER SURRENDER!” with a link to his campaign website.
Other outside companies are also monetizing the viral mugshot. Barstool Sports and Old Row are selling the shirts online. Rock band Green Day is selling shirts with Trump’s mugshot that parody its “Nimrod” album cover, with proceeds going to Maui, Hawaii, wildfire charities.
The Georgia case is not the first of Trump’s legal troubles as he campaigns for president. Trump faces four federal felony charges in a case focusing on the events of January 6, 40 federal felony charges in a case regarding his handling of classified documents after his presidency, and 34 felony charges in a New York hush-money case.
Trump did not participate in the Republican primary debate Wednesday, where eight of his competitors were asked if they would support the former president if he became the nominee and was convicted. All but former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson raised their hand, although former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie claimed he didn’t mean to raise his hand.
Trump is leading by an average of 40% in the GOP primary, according to RealClear Politics.
