Dallas Cowboys second-year defensive end Sam Williams was arrested in Frisco earlier this week on charges of possession of a controlled substance and unlawful carrying of a weapon.

According to a Frisco police report, Williams was pulled over for allegedly speeding and did not have a front license plate or valid registration sticker. As Williams reached for the license plate that was allegedly in the back seat of his car, he told the police officer he had a gun in the car. The officer decided to search the vehicle after noticing a smell.

The search revealed a bag that allegedly carried materials for rolling joints, a vape cartridge, and a handgun with 14 rounds of ammunition.

The incident was the second in the last year for Williams, as he was charged with a misdemeanor for reckless driving after a crash occurred while he was going 98 miles per hour.

“I think the biggest thing is — in all these cases — to get all the information,” head coach Mike McCarthy said about the incident. “I had a chance to visit with Sam right away. He knows what he needs to do. We can all be better.”

“I think anytime you make a mistake, it’s a good wake-up call,” he continued. “I believe in Sam Williams — obviously when we drafted him and even more so now. I’ve seen him grow in so many different ways. He needs to slow down, and he knows that.”

While incidents like this can lead to suspensions and other disciplinary actions, the Cowboys do not expect this to affect Williams’ role on the team.

“I don’t anticipate this impacting his time on the field, and I do have all the details in the public record,” owner Jerry Jones told reporters. “There are some lessons to be learned there for everybody. He hit the wrong combination of things.”
