As Tropical Storm Ida continues its path of destruction northeast through Louisiana and into Mississippi, many people are taking refuge in North Texas. Hotels across the region have filled up in recent days as folks prepare for a potentially weeks-long wait until their power is restored. Currently, the entire city of New Orleans is without electricity.
However, people aren’t the only ones hoping to find safety and shelter from Ida in North Texas. Several animal rescue groups have been working hard over the last week to evacuate animals from shelters in Louisiana and Mississippi ahead of the storm.
The SPCA of Texas is currently housing almost three dozen cats from the Humane Society of South Mississippi at the Russell E. Dealey Animal Rescue Center in Dallas. The cats will be evaluated, given the necessary medical treatment, and placed up for adoption in the next few days.
In addition, Operation Kindness, located in Carrollton, has taken in dogs and cats from the Jefferson Parish Animal Shelter in Louisiana and hopes to find them new homes in the Dallas area. Their available animals can be found on their website, and they are asking anyone who can to consider adding a pet to your family at this time.
If you cannot adopt, both shelters are also grateful for donations as they deal with this influx of new animals. Items such as cat and dog toys, newspapers, canned pet food, or tuna fish are always helpful.
