Sen. Ted Cruz scorched Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and the Democrat party on Tuesday over the ongoing border crisis and mass unlawful migration.
Mayorkas is facing calls for impeachment from political opponents who claim he has undermined American security due to his border policies, as reported by The Dallas Express.
In an August 1 interview with Chris Salcedo on The Salcedo Storm Podcast, Cruz (R-TX) doubled down on his calls for Mayorkas’ impeachment and alleged that Democrat politicians intentionally caused the border crisis.
“I believe the House should impeach Mayorkas right now, today, tomorrow, immediately,” he said.
“Mayorkas is responsible for the utter chaos at our southern border, for the worst dereliction of duty of any cabinet secretary in history,” he claimed. “It is profoundly threatening the safety and security of 30 million Texans and Americans across our country.”
Cruz echoed the sentiment of other Texas officials, such as Rep. Lance Gooden (R-TX), who laid out the case for Mayorkas’ impeachment in an editorial published by The Dallas Express.
Turning to the lawsuit the Department of Justice filed against Texas over a system of water buoys installed on the Rio Grande to deter unlawful migrants, Cruz said, “I think the lawsuit is absolutely disgraceful. I’m proud of the state of Texas for standing up and fighting to try to secure our border.”
“I’m proud of the governor for stepping up and leading on this front, and I think this crisis was caused by deliberate political decisions by Joe Biden, by Kamala Harris, and by Democrat members of the House and Senate, who decided to utterly abdicate their responsibility, who decided to open the border fully, who decided to turn the Mexican drug cartels into multibillion-dollar global criminal enterprises, who decided to allow the worst illegal immigration in our nation’s history — with over 7 million illegal immigrants crossing under Joe Biden — who decided to allow the worst drug trafficking in our nation’s history,” he said.
“Last year, more than 100,000 people died of drug overdoses because of Joe Biden and the Democrats’ open borders,” he claimed. “And none of the Democrats care about any of that.”
“What are they outraged about? ‘How dare Texas try to stop this invasion,’” Cruz quipped. “It is disgraceful. Instead of sending the politicized DOJ to try to stop Texas from defending our borders, the Department of Justice and the Biden administration ought to do their damn job, follow federal law, and secure the border,” he added.
Recently, Gov. Greg Abbott announced that he would take the Biden administration all the way to the Supreme Court to defend Texas’ claim if necessary, as reported by The Dallas Express.
On the other side, Democrats slammed the impeachment push as partisan, with Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) calling it “a completely baseless attempt to impeach Mayorkas,” per Roll Call.
Rep. Veronica Escobar (D-TX) echoed Nadler’s sentiment, adding, “We know that the spectacle you’re seeing on the other side is part of Republicans’ ultimate distraction strategy: impeachment. … I’m surprised that they aren’t trying to impeach the pope,” per Roll Call.
A Department of Homeland Security spokesperson claimed that while House Republicans have “wasted months trying to score points with baseless attacks, Secretary Mayorkas has been doing his job and working to keep Americans safe,” reported Roll Call.
Additionally, the Biden administration has defended its record on border security and migration policy.
DHS recently claimed in a press release, “As a result of planning and execution — which combined stiffer consequences for unlawful entry with a historic expansion of lawful pathways and processes — unlawful entries between ports of entry along the Southwest Border have decreased by more than 70 percent.”
“The Administration’s plan is working as intended,” the department continued.
