A new report detailing population and demographic increases for cities and counties across the North Texas region says Denton County’s population has passed 1 million.

As of January 1, 2023, the North Central Texas Council of Governments estimates the population of Denton County to be 1,006,492 residents.

This number is an increase of 3.2% compared to 2022 when an estimated 975,158 people resided in the county.

Four of the 44 communities in the county were among the fastest-growing cities in the metroplex, according to the report. These communities include Celina, which grew by 38.8%; Haslet, which grew by 31%; Argyle, which grew by 20.3%; and Northlake, which grew by 18.7%.

Various county precinct members reported that they had seen significant growth in their sections of the city, according to a press release.

Precinct 1 Commissioner Ryan Williams said that there had been growth, particularly along Highway 380, in communities such as Prosper, Little Elm, and Frisco.

“The significant growth along the 380 Corridor is exactly why we pushed up plans to expand U.S. 380 as quickly as possible,” said Williams, per the release. “We know the growth is far from over, and we want to ensure our residents can travel to and from their homes and work safely and efficiently.”

Precinct 2 Commissioner Kevin W. Falconer also noted growth within his sector.

“Our major cities in southern Denton County – Carrollton, Dallas, Lewisville, Plano, and The Colony – continue to see additional residents,” said Falconer, per the release. “These five communities attracted 8,560 individuals, showing tremendous growth, which continues throughout Denton County and not just in one sector.”

Denton County Judge Andy Eads stressed the importance of preparing for future growth.

“What we do today to prepare for tomorrow will be among the most important things we can accomplish as a county,” said Eads in the release. “The groundwork we lay now will help our future population to flourish.”

Collin County also experienced significant growth, with a 3.6% rise in population, increasing from approximately 1,135,058 in 2022 to 1,175,974 in 2023.
