It has been a spectacular year for Texas Christian University athletics.

The Horned Frogs played for the national championship in football, losing to Georgia, and reached the NCAA men’s basketball tournament where the Horned Frogs lost to the Gonzaga Bulldogs.

Now, TCU is advancing to the College World Series in baseball.

The Frogs punched their ticket to Omaha, Nebraska, on Saturday night with a Super Regional victory over Indiana State, 6-4, before a record crowd of 8,994 at Lupton Stadium in Fort Worth.

TCU won the best-of-three series by sweeping the Indiana State Sycamores.

Indiana State led until TCU scored five runs in the fourth inning. Cole Fontenelle hit a solo home run in the fifth.

Pitcher Sam Stoutenborough (5-0) started for TCU. He allowed three runs on five hits. Ben Abeldt allowed a run on four hits, walked two, and struck out two.

TCU has won 11 straight games and 19 of 21 since May 1.

The trip to Omaha will be the sixth since 2010 for the Horned Frogs and the first trip under coach Kirk Saarloos.

“It’s hard to get to the World Series,” Saarloos told the team after the game, according to tcu360.com. “It’s really, really hard. And, you know, we went four years in a row and made it look pretty easy, but there was a lot of luck involved in that. Just some bounces our way, and it happened four times in a row, and I think people forget how difficult it is.”

Saarloos was named the 20th head coach in program history on June 15, 2021, after serving in an assistant coaching capacity for nine years.

TCU improved to 42-22 overall this season.

The Horned Frogs will face Oral Roberts in their opening game in Omaha. Oral Roberts advanced to the College World Series after defeating Oregon 11-6 in the Eugene Super Regional on Sunday.
