Food and Drug Administration advisors voted unanimously Wednesday in support of selling the birth-control pill Opill over the counter.
The advisors said the benefits would outweigh the risks.
The final vote was 17-0 for approval.
The FDA is expected to rule in the summer if it agrees with the recommendation.
The pill would be the first birth control pill sold without a prescription since oral contraceptives were approved more than 60 years ago.
