President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris released their tax returns on Tuesday, the U.S. deadline to file them.
President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden filed their income tax return jointly. They reported a combined adjusted gross income of $579,514 based on President Biden’s $400,000 presidential income, according to the filed tax records. The First Lady also reported an income of $82,335 from her job at Northern Virginia Community College as an English professor.
The two reported joint payments of $169,820 in federal, Delaware, and Virginia taxes, which marks a 23.8% federal tax rate in 2022, per The White House. They reportedly paid $137,658 in federal income tax, $29,023 in Delaware state income tax, and $3,139 in Virginia state income tax.
They also reported contributing a total of $20,180 to 20 charities.
The White House statement said that President Biden releasing his tax returns this year, and for the past 25 years, indicates “his commitment to being transparent with the American people about the finances of the Commander-in-Chief,” and added that “President Biden has released the most tax returns of any president while in office.”
In 2021, the Bidens reported a joint income of $610,702. Their 2021 income was similar to their 2020 income of $607,336. The past three years have indicated a decrease compared to their 2019 joint income, which was $985,223, per Fox News.
Vice President Kamala Harris and Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff also reported their tax returns for 2022.
The two reported a federal adjusted gross income of $456,918 while paying $93,570 in federal income tax, marking an effective federal income tax rate of 20.5%. They also reported $17,612 in California income tax and $9,697 in District of Columbia income tax, per The White House. Harris and Emhoff paid a total of $120,870 in taxes.
Harris made $219,171 from her salary as vice president and reported $74,772 in income as a writer. Emhoff reported a salary of roughly $170,000 for working at Georgetown Law School, per CBS News. Harris and Emhoff also contributed to charities in 2022 to the tune of $23,000.
The tax returns from Harris and Emhoff indicate a significant decrease from 2021, where they reported a total adjusted income of $1.66 million, per CBS News.
