Four Dallas-Fort Worth-area high school soccer teams won state championships as the University Interscholastic League held the final rounds of its state tournaments at Birkelbach Field in Georgetown last weekend.

DFW schools took home the 4A, 5A, and 6A titles in the girls’ bracket, while Frisco Lonestar (5A) was the only boys’ champion from the Metroplex.

The other boys’ state champions were Hidalgo Early College (4A) and Katy Seven Lakes (6A).

Frisco Lone Star won the boys’ 5A state championship with a 4-1 victory over El Paso Bel Air. Bartek Zabek scored the game’s first two goals as Lone Star built a 3-0 lead with about 20 minutes left to play. After a Bel Air goal, Tucker Eason converted on a penalty kick to help the Rangers win the title in their first state tournament appearance.

Frisco schools have won five boys’ 5A soccer championships since 2017, with Frisco Wakeland winning the other four.

The Celina High School girls’ soccer team won its second straight 4A state title, completing a perfect 29-0 season with an 8-1 win over Stephenville. The Bobcats scored five goals in the first 27:29 of the game and added three more in the second half. Lexi Tuite was named the MVP after a five-goal performance in the final match.

“It’s a coaches dream to even get to state, and to win it in back-to-back years is just something that’s so hard to do in any sport,” Celina head coach Alexander Adams told The Dallas Express. “…No matter what the classification, to think we were able to do it two years in a row is amazing.”

Grapevine High School girls’ team won the 5A state championship with a 1-0 victory over Frisco. The Lady Mustangs knocked off undefeated Comal Smithson Valley in overtime in the state semifinals to reach the championship game. Theresa McCullough scored the only goal of Saturday’s match on a penalty kick at the 51:21 mark to help Grapevine win its first state title.

“I’m blown away,” Grapevine head coach Steven McBride told The Dallas Express. “I don’t think it was our mission to go to state. Obviously, that’s a dream for everybody, but it ended up being a destination for us.”

“[The season] couldn’t have started worse for us than it did, and to have the finish of — not just getting there — but being able to follow through with our first championship was just an unbelievable achievement for the girls.”

Lewisville Marcus was the final champion from the area, defeating Fort Bend Ridge Point, 2-0, in the girls’ 6A state finals. Bella Campos scored both Marcus goals in the second half and was named MVP. It was the Marauders’ first state championship since winning the 5A title in 2005.

The Wylie East girls’ team and the Garland Sachse and Allen boys’ teams came up just short, with losses in the state semifinals.
