Artwork created by students in the University of Texas at Dallas’ projection mapping lab class is currently on display nightly at the Omni Dallas Hotel.
Through the end of the month, the students’ creations will serve as a luminescent part of the Dallas skyline, illuminated on Omni’s 23-story LED display. The exhibition of the artwork is being done in the context of UTD’s “Cosmic Trailblazing: Comet Artistry Takes Over Dallas Skyline” course.
This class teaches students how to animate static images through projection mapping. Projection mapping is a technique by which a 3D object (such as a hotel) is input into specialized software to serve as a display for video.
The Omni partnered with local artists in celebration of Dallas Arts Month. Sixteen animation projects are part of the display.
Associate Professor Andrew F. Scott, who taught the projection mapping lab course, told NBC, “I always look for opportunities to take projects that we are doing in class and get them out into the community.”
Scott also shared what makes the program meaningful for him with the UTD News Center.
“I like big stages for our students because I think what they do is important. I think what they do is very creative, and people need to see it. Being able to facilitate getting their work on that stage makes me feel really good for them,” said Scott, according to NBC.
Community projects like the one with Omni also give students an idea of how the broader world may receive their work.
Student artwork is now visible from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. each night and will be showcased through the end of April.
