A possible double-murder suicide has wracked a quiet residential area in Collin County.
Officers with the Murphy Police Department (MPD) found two people dead from multiple gunshot wounds and one in critical condition last Monday evening around 6 p.m., according to a Tuesday press release.
The incident occurred at a home in the 400 block of Whisperfield Drive, a town just a few miles east of Plano.
The Murphy homeowners were identified by police the following day as Federico Cantu Jr., 63, and Tracy Kay Cantu, 57, a married couple. The former’s body was found in the house, while his wife’s body was discovered in the driveway.
Police claimed that the third person, found in the backyard, was the likely shooter.
The alleged shooter was 35-year-old Vincent Cantu. MPD officers found him in the backyard with a suspected self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The man was reportedly Federico Cantu’s son and Tracy Cantu’s stepson. Police said that he was not a resident of the home at the time of the shootings.
He was still alive upon the arrival of authorities, who attempted to perform life-saving measures. He was transported to Medical City Plano by a Sachse Fire Department ambulance, where he later died of his injury.
Vincent Cantu came to the house with another individual, who is now cooperating with authorities. After the two arrived, the victims were allegedly attacked with multiple weapons. Police believe he then shot himself with the intent of taking his own life.
It is currently unclear whether MPD considers the person accompanying Vincent Cantu a suspect, but the investigation is ongoing.
Police have yet to reveal a possible motive for the violent attack.
While the kind of violence that has just affected Murphy residents is relatively uncommon for the town, the same cannot be said for nearby Dallas, where murders were up by roughly 20% as of Tuesday, according to a daily crime briefing published by the Dallas Police Department. Year to date on Tuesday, 83 people had been killed in the city.
