President Joe Biden designated the Castner Range in West Texas and the Spirit Mountain area in southern Nevada as new national monuments Tuesday.

The Castner Range is in El Paso and contains more than 6,600 acres of high mountain desert. It served as a U.S. Army training site during World War II and the Korean and Vietnam wars until 1966.

Before that, it was home to members of the Apache, Comanche, and Pueblo tribes.

Biden made the announcement at the White House Conservation in Action Summit in Washington on Tuesday afternoon.

“[The] Castner Range [National Monument] will offer unique opportunities for the El Paso community to experience, explore, and learn from nature,” the White House said in a statement.
