A man was arrested for allegedly stealing money intended for victims of the devastating earthquake that occurred in Turkey and Syria after he broke into a Muslim community center in Flower Mound.
Flower Mound police said in a press release per NBC DFW that Muhammad S. Khan, 36, was arrested by police in Richardson on Saturday.
Khan allegedly broke into the Islamic Association of Lewisville and Flower Mound, police said in the release. Police claim that he was driving the same car that was used in the robbery, and it was picked up by a license plate reader. The license plate reader then alerted the police that the driver had an active warrant out in Flower Mound, police said.
Afterward, Khan was apparently stopped by police and taken into custody.
Khan is charged with three counts of felony burglary and is being held on a $10,000 bond after being taken to the Denton County Jail following his theft of the earthquake relief funds.
“It’s a shameful act that someone would rob money that’s intended for some of the poorest of the poor and who are going through unimaginable difficulties,” Razaq Khazi-Syed, president of the Islamic Association of Lewisville and Flower Mound, said to NBC DFW. “To think that someone would actually take money for [earthquake victims] is heartless.”
The earthquake in Turkey and Syria has taken the lives of more than 50,000 people so far. Both Turkey and Syria are majority Muslim countries.
In nearby Dallas, the Public Safety Committee was told by the Dallas Police Department that violent crime is up by nearly 6%, as previously reported by The Dallas Express.
