A Valentine’s Day chocolate candy sold by the retail giant Target is under a recall order due to concerns over potential allergens not listed on the ingredients label.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall for the Favorite Day brand Valentine’s Milk Chocolate Covered Caramels with Nonpareils, sold at Target stores nationwide. The candy may contain traces of tree nuts, according to Bring Me The News.

The product has been voluntarily recalled, the FDA stated in a news release, cautioning consumers that the product may contain traces of tree nuts that were not identified in the ingredients list on the packaging.

The product in question was packaged in 8-ounce stand-up pouch bags and marked with lot #33822. The candy has a best-by date of December 7, 2023, according to KCCI News.

Favorite Day chocolates are made by the Illinois-based company Silvestri Sweets.

As the name suggests, tree nuts are nuts that grow on trees, such as almonds, Brazil nuts, cashews, hazelnuts, pecans, pistachios, and walnuts. Tree nut allergies affect 0.5% to 1% of Americans, according to the American Academy of Allergy Asthma & Immunology (AAAAI).

Consumers with a tree nut allergy can “run the risk of a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products,” the FDA said in the recall statement.

Customers who purchased the chocolates can contact Target’s guest relations department to request a refund, KCCI reported.

No illnesses have been reported, according to the FDA.
