Hosting a Super Bowl party and planning to serve some chicken wings?
There is good news for poultry-loving football fans as chicken wing prices have fallen since last year’s big game, reported Money.com.
Chicken wings are running at $2.62 per pound, down from $2.98 a year prior, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s weekly price report.
Poultry producers have ramped up their chicken supply to the highest levels since 2019, according to Wells Fargo agricultural economist Michael Swanson.
This comes at a time when egg prices have dominated headlines for their exorbitant costs, soaring 60% this year, driven by bird flu outbreaks, according to The Wall Street Journal. However, the chickens we consume are not as susceptible to the disease as the chickens that lay eggs are, said Money.com.
Swanson expects prices to increase leading up to the game, but they are still down 22% from last year’s Super Bowl.
Americans consume a lot of chicken wings during the Super Bowl. The National Chicken Council expects 84 million more chicken wings to be served this Super Bowl weekend than last year, for a total of 1.45 billion.
“The two main reasons are more favorable prices and more people getting back to normal and gathering for the big game, whether at home or at a bar/restaurant,” Tom Super, spokesperson for the National Chicken Council, said.
Guacamole lovers are also in luck, as prices for avocados are down 20% from last year due to an abundance of supply this year. Sirloin steak prices have also fallen, nearly $1 per pound, to $10.17, according to Swanson.
The foods mentioned appear to be outliers, however, with overall grocery prices up 11.8% in the last year, according to the “food at home” index included in the latest Consumer Price Index.
Beer drinkers will also notice an increase in prices, as they have risen 11% compared to last year’s Super Bowl.
