Dallas-based haircare company Nu Standard Hair has landed a sales deal with a Sally Beauty distributor.

Nu Standard’s new Hydrasilk Hydrating Bond System will be sold exclusively with CosmoProf, a Sally Beauty Holdings company and the leading wholesale hair product distributor for licensed professionals.

Haircare heiress Autumn Yarbrough, founder of Nu Standard, was honored at a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Sally Beauty Headquarters in Denton on January 20 to celebrate the achievement.

Yarbrough created the new hair treatment system, which she says is curated for the “Busy Queen on the go.” Her company focuses on understanding and treating textured hair to maximize hair health.

Nu Standard follows a simple three-step system that aims to care for, nourish, and treat hair.

Yarbrough could hardly maintain her composure at the ceremony due to her excitement, which was mirrored by her family, members from CosmoProf, and Harrison Blair, president of the Dallas Black Chamber of Commerce (DBCC).

“Bringing Nu Standard and Autumn [Yarbrough] into our collection of brands has been a tremendous win for us so that we can serve all hair types in our entire beauty community, so this is a huge win for CosmoProf as a whole, and we’re just happy that she’s here, sincerely,” said Dana Ranger, senior manager of CosmoProf’s planning and merchandising, in an interview with The Dallas Express.

Yarbrough could hardly hold back tears of joy as she spoke to The Dallas Express.

“This moment is a moment in history,” she declared.

“We’re making history to be in professional stores, first time introducing black-founded brands — we’re one of four that have been introduced — and to be black-owned in hair is amazing and really breaking that glass ceiling, blurring the lines that you can be black-owned, made for all.”

Yarbrough was also honored by Blair at the ceremony, as she and her company have become one of the newest members of the DBCC.

“I love when large corporations are working with independent black creators to put these kinds of products on the shelf because representation is important across the board,” said Blair.

“We are honored to be even a small part of today’s process of getting this new product in this new line and honored just to get to meet this entrepreneur,” Blair told The Dallas Express.

“A lot of blood, sweat, and tears went into this moment, and we’re here just to cut the ribbon, but I’m really interested in her story and the story of her family and how they connected to the city of Dallas already and what they hope to achieve.”

Yarbrough is a part of three generations of hair royalty. Her family has been in the haircare business since her grandfather Comer Cottrell Jr. and his brother James helped create the Pro-Line Corporation in downtown Los Angeles in 1970.

The company, which went global, helped to popularize the Jheri curl style among the American masses in the 80s.

Nu Standard was founded in 2020.
