Icy roads and freezing rain and sleet Monday reportedly caused hundreds of traffic accidents in Fort Worth and many school closures and cancellations in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

These accidents sent at least 25 people to the hospital, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.

The National Weather Service (NWS) warned people of the dangerous conditions.

“We cannot stress this enough, please slow down and take your time if you are on the roads underneath these storms of sleet and freezing rain,” a tweet from the weather service read.

Temperatures dropped Monday to the low 20s and 30s.

Allison Prater, a meteorologist from the National Weather Service in Fort Worth, told The Dallas Express on Monday that the NWS wasn’t expecting any snow, but that the weather could take a turn for the worse on Tuesday.

She also said that the thunder sleet, reported in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, is causing the roads to become more dangerous.

“It’s pretty much when lightning and thunder come with a sleet storm,” she said. “When a thunderstorm has rain with lightning and thunder, it’s the same concept.”

Prater said anybody who doesn’t have to drive on Tuesday shouldn’t, saying that the worst conditions will be felt in the northwestern metroplex area.

“We’re gonna have more significant ice accumulation expected tonight (Monday) into Tuesday morning,” said Prater. “Road conditions are expected to deteriorate over the day and then we’ll have another round or two of winter precipitation through Tuesday night into Wednesday.”
