A Dallas police officer was injured in a shootout with a suspect Wednesday at an apartment complex in Kessler Park.
The alleged shooter was a capital murder suspect, NBC 5 DFW reported.
The police officer was hospitalized. The suspect died after being taken to a hospital, according to The Dallas Morning News.
According to the Dallas Police Department, officers attempted to apprehend the suspect at the Bahama Glen apartment complex on the 2500 block of Bahama Drive.
The driver of the vehicle parked and was arrested without incident, but the unnamed suspect in the passenger side of the car refused to leave the vehicle and began firing at the officers.
Kristin Lowman, spokesperson for the Dallas Police Department, said the officer was shot in the foot and is expected to survive while the capital murder suspect is reported to be in critical condition at a nearby hospital.
NBC 5 described seeing officers performing CPR on a person in the grass nearby the apartment complex as well as a person being loaded into an ambulance before being taken to a hospital.
A bullet-ridden red car was also observed at the scene.
Police did not confirm the identity of the apprehended suspect except to say that the suspect was wanted for a murder in North Texas.
Lowman further stated that the local district attorney’s office was notified about the shooting, which she said was standard protocol in order to conduct a review of the police shooting.
The Office of Police Community Oversight, which is responsible for reviewing police actions, was also notified.
The Dallas Express reached out to the Dallas Police Department’s public information officers for additional information but did not receive a response before press time.
Lowman said that the officer-involved shooting remains under investigation.
The shooting took place in District 5, which is represented by Councilmember Jaime Resendez.
The alleged shooter, who was wanted on suspicion of capital murder, apparently contributed to a wave of crime in Dallas and across the metroplex. Twenty murders and non-negligent homicides have been reported in Dallas so far this year — an 11% increase year-to-date, according to the City’s crime analytics dashboard.
