A man has been arrested by police for allegedly fatally stabbing another man in a South Dallas neighborhood.
Officers of the Dallas Police Department (DPD) responded to a call last Thursday at approximately 2:25 a.m. in the 4800 block of Elsie Faye Heggins Street. When officers arrived on the scene, they found a man with multiple lacerations.
According to police, the victim was Johnnie Earl Morgan Jr., 52. He had been stabbed multiple times.
Dallas Fire-Rescue came to the scene and transported Morgan to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Officers were able to identify a suspect, 34-year-old Jerry Lee Massey. He was taken into custody and has been charged with murder.
Police did not say how they identified Massey as the suspect and have not shared a motive for the brutal stabbing.
Massey is currently being held in Dallas County Jail on a $1 million bond.
The deadly attack took place in District 7, city councilman Adam Bazaldua’s district.
Bazaldua has been featured multiple times in The Dallas Express’ Crime Boss series for clocking significant year-over-year increases in reported crimes.
District 7 saw more than 10,000 crimes committed last year, more than 10% of which were categorized as violent, including 37 murders and more than 3,000 assault offenses, according to data available on the City of Dallas Open Data crime analytics dashboard.
As previously reported in The Dallas Express, notable spikes in violent crime in Bazaldua’s District 7 plagued district residents in the fall, with little done in response by the city council, allowing for an alarming six homicides to hit the district in October 2022 alone.
It is unclear whether the city council will provide DPD with the tools and manpower it needs to handle Dallas’ serious crime problem, which has only grown in the first two weeks of the new year.
