The Dallas Police Department opened up an investigation Tuesday into a man’s death while in police custody, according to The Dallas Morning News.
The man — whose name had not been released at the time of publication — reportedly suffered a cardiac arrest while being transported in an ambulance to a local hospital where he died around 11:19 p.m.
Police initially detained the man after responding to a medical emergency in southeast Oak Cliff at around 10 p.m., according to a police press release.
The person was described as a “combative patient” and police said they used “minimal force” in an attempt to control him before putting him on a stretcher and transporting him to a hospital. The man was placed into handcuffs at one point.
Dallas Fire-Rescue was first on the scene and they, together with a family member, were attempting to keep him under control, the press release said.
Along with the man, the names of the firefighters or police officers involved have also not been released yet.
The Office of Community Police Oversight was notified about the incident.
The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office is conducting an independent investigation, and the DPD Special Investigations Unit is conducting its own investigation.
