Lebanon Trail’s junior star Nathan Tserng outlasted Frisco’s Mohan Yechuri in a hard-fought 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 win to capture the UIL Class 5A Tennis Boys Singles state title.
In one of the most competitive matches of the tournament, Tserng relied on his athleticism down the stretch after having earned his way to the finals by knocking off Austin Liberal Arts and Science’s Ted Gershon in straight sets in the quarterfinals (6-1, 7-5) and Lubbock’s Harrison Bennett in the semifinals (6-2, 6-2)
In the finals, Tserng and Yechuri were both well aware of what they were getting into, having already faced off against one another six times in the regular season, including in the final of the district and regional tournaments. The two are also practice partners at the same tennis club.
With the title finally within his reach, Tserng told DallasNews.com, “I’m pretty proud of myself as I worked really hard to get here. I was hitting all my shots well, my defense was good and everything was working together.”
