An early morning fire on Wednesday damaged or destroyed several vehicles in a five-story parking garage at a Dallas apartment complex near Love Field.
Firefighters responded to a report of a vehicle fire around 4 a.m. on June 26 at the Inwood Station Apartments at 2727 Inwood Rd. They saw heavy smoke billowing from the third floor of the parking garage. Some 40 firefighters battled the blaze, which was brought under control within a couple of hours, according to The Dallas Morning News.
Eight vehicles were completely burned in the fire, and the intense heat damaged 13 others. However, no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
In March, firefighters responded to a car fire at another Dallas apartment parking garage, WFAA reported. The fire occurred at the Village on the Green apartments on the northeast side of the Galleria Dallas Mall.
Beyond consuming eight vehicles, the fire also damaged the walls of the parking garage.
Investigators believe the fire started in one vehicle before spreading to others in the garage, but the exact cause was unknown.
According to the U.S. Fire Administration, it is important to have cars regularly serviced by a trained mechanic to prevent vehicle fires. If you must put gas cans or propane tanks inside your vehicle, keep them tightly sealed and on a flat surface away from passengers. Keep the windows open to prevent fumes from building up.
If your vehicle does catch fire while on the road, it is important to pull over as quickly as possible. Once you have stopped, turn off the engine immediately. Get everyone out of the vehicle and never return to a burning vehicle. Do not attempt to fight the fire yourself.
If you think there is a fire under the hood or trunk, do not open it, as this could cause the fire to grow.
Move everyone at least 100 feet away from the burning vehicle and away from traffic.
