‘Way to go ladies’: Lady Argyle golf team clenches state title

The Argyle Lady Eagles golf team took the state title after lightening took teams off of the course early.

When lightning struck, the Lady Eagles were pulled off the course after the 15th hole, with many teams unable to finish. This resulted in the UIL leveraging a 27-hole scoring system meaning the first nine holes were the only holes scored. This left last year’s state champions, Andrews, tied with Argyle. The UIL transitioned to a scorecard playoff, comparing the best scores from each team to declare a winner, crowning Argyle as the 2021 state champions.

The team was congratulated by a state lawmaker.

“Way to go ladies,” Sen. Jane Nelson said on Twitter.

Argyle’s Lauren Justice shot a 43 that basically crowned the Lady Eagles the new champions.

It was the program’s first 4A title.

“We preach and talk all the time that this is team golf,” Argyle girls golf coach Nathan Moses told the Denton Record Chronicle. “Somebody may have a bad day, and you have teammates that will pick you up. We talk all the time that every stroke matters. You never know when your score is going to be the score that matters.”

Argyle shot 315 as a team for the opening round. They were 11 strokes ahead of Andrews but entered the final round with a mere two stroke lead.

Claire Jensen carried the team carding a 76.

“It’s overwhelming,” Moses said. “It’s unbelievable. The first time I cried today we just found out they had shortened it to 27 holes. Everybody is trying to do math in their head, and I’m pretty notorious for not wanting to know because I feel like it affects the way I coach. I wanted to grab our kids, and I told them, ‘I don’t know where we stand.’ But I wanted them to know right then how proud I was and how proud I was to be their coach. It’s just pretty amazing.”
