Two men accused of shooting a Dallas artist in July are in custody.
Antonio “Tony” Lechuga was allegedly shot while jogging on the Sante Fe Trail in Old East Dallas on July 15. The two men arrested, Jonathan Chapa, 21, and Gilbert Uvalle, 20, were booked into the Dallas County Jail on August 18, according to police records.
Both men face multiple charges, including aggravated assault.
The arrest warrant affidavit stated that Dallas Police Department spoke with multiple witnesses. The witnesses included two people who informed police they were allegedly the intended targets of the shooting, and Lechuga appeared to have been caught in the crossfire.
“Just minding my own business. I remember hearing the shots, and I remember thinking they were in the distance,” Lechuga recalled to NBC DFW in early August. “Felt like I got hit with a bat in my stomach or someone knocked the wind out of me.”
Lechuga was transported by ambulance to the ICU. He stayed there for a week and has since been recovering at a hospital.
The shooting was believed to be related to two gangs involved in recent crimes across Dallas and Garland. The same gangs are allegedly tied to the June murder of 14-year-old Jordan Perez at an Old East Dallas park, according to the affidavit.
Uvalle was held on a $225,000 bond; Chapa’s bond was set at $450,000. It is unknown whether attorneys represented the two suspects.
