Local favorite taco joint Trompo, in Oak Cliff, has officially closed its doors for good. The restaurant announced via Instagram that its Bishop Arts District location served up its last order on December 24.
The Instagram post showed a photo of an expo ticket with an order name that reads “The Last Taco,” dated December 24 and time-stamped 5:57 p.m.
According to the Dallas Observer, the taco spot’s owner, Luis Olvera, says it’s scheduled to be torn down.
Trompo’s first Oak Cliff location was a tiny taqueria opened in 2015 on Singleton Boulevard in West Dallas. Then, in 2019, the restaurant relocated to a space on 10th Street in Bishop Arts. The new restaurant was an upgrade, almost entirely outdoors, with window service, a shaded patio, and a large courtyard. There, Olvera expanded his menu, adding brunch and burger sliders to Trompo’s classic Mexican fare of tacos and quesadillas.
While Trompo has closed up shop in Oak Cliff, the East Dallas location at 4201 Gaston Avenue remains. Opened in August, this location is less flashy than the Bishop Arts iteration, more closely resembling the original West Dallas store.
Olvera says Trompo is currently establishing itself in its latest neighborhood. “We’re meeting our neighbors, and honestly, this will be a nice refresh for East Dallas.”
The Oak Cliff spot was taking up a lot of his time, the restaurant’s owner told the Dallas Observer, and he is excited to move forward in livening up Trompo’s East Dallas presence. His plans might include a return to pop-up taco spots, “back to [their] roots and [the] things that fueled [them] in the beginning.”
Oak Cliff locals may not need to despair over the loss of Trompo for long. “Oak Cliff is my home. Trompo started in my backyard, and we are aggressively pursuing another spot in the neighborhood,” Olvera said.
