The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office said a 23-year-old man was fatally struck by a vehicle on Saturday, Oct. 16, after stopping on Interstate 35E near Commonwealth Drive to help the victims of an earlier accident.

According to the sheriff’s office, the earlier accident was allegedly caused by an intoxicated 21-year-old woman who had lost control of her vehicle. Following the 21-year-old’s loss of control, her car hit a guardrail and veered back into traffic before it was struck by another vehicle. Officials said the first accident occurred around 3 am.

The sheriff’s office added that the 23-year-old man, who has not been identified, had stopped to aid the victims of the first accident when he was struck and killed. Police revealed that an on-coming motorist crashed into a car involved in the original accident, in addition to hitting the Good Samaritan.

The sheriff’s office said the 23-year-old man was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead at around 3:30 am. Police identified the alleged intoxicated driver responsible for the first accident as Victoria Garner-Council, 21. The sheriff’s office stated that Council was arrested for her role in the string of accidents and was later charged with driving while intoxicated.

The sheriff’s office also revealed that the driver of the car that struck and killed the 23-year-old man was not arrested, and is expected that charges would not be filed against the driver. No details were provided about the condition of other victims involved in the earlier crash.

The name of the Good Samaritan will not be released until next-of-kin is notified.
