The Dallas suburb of Colleyville was named to a list of the safest cities in the United States.

Colleyville, a city of 30,000 people 27 miles northwest of Dallas and 16 miles northeast of Fort Worth, ranked 58th on the list compiled by the home security company SafeWise.

The rankings are based on crime statistics reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Andrew Hull, outreach specialist for SafeWise told the Dallas Express.

“Colleyville had some of the lowest crime rates in the country,” Hull said.

Typically, residents of cities with the lowest crime rates have higher incomes, he added.

“That is definitely true in Colleyville,” Hull said. “The median household income in Colleyville is $175,000.”

The average income of residents in the 100 cities that made the SafeWise list was more than $100,000, Hull said.

The safest cities tend to be suburbs, he added.

“We find that cities that allocate a lot of their budget to public safety tend to see results,” he said. “We saw that with Colleyville as well. Colleyville’s 2021 budget made a priority to preserve public safety. That absolutely plays a part.”

Safer cities benefit in several ways, he added.

“Being considered a safe city no doubt has an impact on a city’s reputation,” Hull said. “That can only be a positive impact.”

Making the list “definitely wouldn’t hurt real estate values,” Hull said.

Hopkinton, Massachusetts landed the top ranking on the safest city list followed by Franklin, Massachusetts, Oakland Township, Michigan and Bernards Township, New Jersey.

Other Texas cities that made the list were Horizon City at 65th, Murphy at 72th and University Park at 91st.

Colleyville is named for Lilburn Howard Colley, a physician and Union Army Veteran who settled in the area in 1880, the city’s website said. It was incorporated as Colleyville on Jan. 10, 1956 and in 1960 it only had 1,500 residents.
