A robotics team from Cistercian Preparatory School in Irving recently won the 2022 FIRST Robotics Competition world championship as part of a four-team alliance.
The robotics team — Fusion Corps (FR 6672) — comprises students from the Irving school, the only Texas team represented among those in the winning alliance at the competition.
According to FIRST, around 800 student robotics teams from 43 countries competed in the world championship at the end of April. The event also hosted more than 30,000 students, mentors, coaches, media, volunteers, sponsors, and supporters from around the world.
The four-day event concluded on April 24 when the Irving School’s robotic team was crowned this year’s FIRST Robotics Competition Winning Alliance. The other three teams in the alliance were The Cheesy Poofs from San Jose, California; Up-A-Creek Robotics from Longmont, Colorado; and Knight Vision from Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan.
“I have met so many great students, volunteers, mentors, alumni, and sponsors who truly embody the FIRST mission and Core Values,” said Chris Moore, chief executive officer of FIRST. “People who strive to be Gracious Professionals who innovate, compete, and collaborate with equal energy. People who share our common passion for science and technology as a force for good with the world. The rewards of your efforts don’t stop at this event.”
Nathan Comeaux, the business captain on the team and a senior at the Irving school, said that being at the championship was amazing. He added that the competition helped him make friends from places worldwide, including Israel and Mexico.
“Worlds is what every kid in FRC around the globe dreams about,” Comeaux said, according to NBC 5. “As such a young team with limited resources, it’s an amazing testament to the hundreds of hours our team has put into the program.”
Comeaux’s partners on the team include Andrew Oliver, junior and programming captain; James Novinski, sophomore and team driver; Blake Harris, senior and co-engineering captain; and Ryan Jackson, junior and co-engineering captain.
