The Plano Police Department is hosting a seminar to teach students heading to college about safety as crime increases across the nation.

The department announced the program in a recent Facebook post, calling it a “Personal Safety for College-Bound Students seminar.”

The event is scheduled for August 2 at 6 p.m. The venue is the Program Room at the Davis Library, located at 7501-B Independence Parkway in Plano.

The seminar is part of the Plano Police Department’s Crime Prevention Unit’s Summer Program Safety Series. Plano Public Library sponsors it.

In the program, students will learn how to protect themselves and their property during their time at college. That way, each student can reduce their “chance of being a crime victim,” the department says. Students will also learn how to increase their situational awareness.

No registration is required to attend the event.

Per the department, the safety lessons on August 2 will be presented by Officer Chris Bianez, a certified speaking professional (CSPTM) and certified crime prevention specialist. Bianez earned a master’s degree in Human Resources Training & Development and has served in law enforcement for over 25 years. He will be presenting several seminars in the department’s safety series.
