As summer fun kicks off for students, the Dallas Public Library and the mayor are encouraging and enticing children and adults to keep up with their reading during the next few months.

The SMART Summer with Mayor Eric Johnson reading program starts Saturday, June 5, with virtual programs for adults called “UFOs & You: Discussing The Pentagon’s UFO Report,” and two programs about sharks from a former Dallas Zoo paleontologist and the Texas State Aquarium for kids. The summer reading program is also done with support from the Friends of the Dallas Public Library.

Johnson’s office posted a tweet on June 2 encouraging students and parents to signup for the reading program.

“SMART Summer with Mayor Johnson, a partnership with the Friends of the @dallaslibrary, kicks off virtually on Saturday,” the mayor’s office tweet said June 2. “Find out more about how your child can participate by visiting http://DallasLibrary.Beanstack.com.”

The program will run from June 5 to Aug. 14. Kids up to 18 years old can sign up and track their reading progress. They will also have the opportunity to earn prizes for reaching their reading goals, by reading at least 20 minutes a day for 10 days at a time.

The more reading each child does, the more opportunities they have to earn prizes, such as a free book, or be entered in a raffle to earn grand prizes after reading for at least 50 days throughout the duration of SMART Summer.

The first events are shark-themed and will take place virtually. The first event “Nature + Play: Megalodon!” starts at 11 a.m. and gives kids the chance to learn about the prehistoric species and make a craft with a former Dallas Zoo paleontologist. The second event, “Dive Into Sharks With The Texas State Aquarium,” begins at 2 p.m. and gives kids the opportunity to talk with a diver in the shark.

To add more excitement to the mix, kids can boost their chances of winning a grand prize by competing in at-home science, math, art and technology activities.

Though the event is catered toward kids, all ages can track their reading progress over the summer. Adults have the chance to be entered to win a behind-the-scenes library tour.

Those who are interested in signing up can visit the website here to begin their reading fun.
