It is estimated that someone in the U.S. suffers a stroke every 40 seconds. As often as it occurs, it isn’t surprising that stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and adult disability. Those statistics emphasize the importance of early stroke detection and treatment to save lives and speed recovery times.

Locally, Parkland Health & Hospital System has committed to prioritizing quality care for stroke patients. Because of this commitment, the hospital has gained national accolades from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association

Parkland received the Get With The Guidelines-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award, recognizing the hospital’s commitment to ensuring that stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines.

“This marks the sixth consecutive year that Parkland has achieved a Gold Plus or higher Get With The Guidelines Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association,” said Mark Johnson, MD, Chief of the Cerebrovascular Diseases and Stroke Program at Parkland. “We’re honored to be recognized for our dedication to helping our patients have the best possible chance of survival after a stroke.”

Get With The Guidelines-Stroke was developed to assist healthcare professionals in providing the most up-to-date, research-based treatments to stroke patients.

“We are pleased to recognize Parkland Health & Hospital System for their commitment to stroke care,” said Lee H. Schwamm, MD, national chairperson of the Quality Oversight Committee and Executive Vice-Chair of Neurology, Director of Acute Stroke Services, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. “Research has shown that hospitals adhering to clinical measures through the Get With The Guidelines quality improvement initiative can often see fewer readmissions and lower mortality rates.”
