The Dallas Office of Homeless Solutions honors individuals who give to others but are encouraging those who give to make “responsible” choices when giving to the homeless.

The office, along with the Metro Dallas Homeless Alliance (MDHA) is asking the public to hand out their much-appreciated donations in shelters instead of on the streets.

Providing the shelters with generous donations “is one of the most effective ways to alleviate the suffering of neighbors living outdoors,” according to a press release from the Office of Homeless Solutions.

Director of the Office of Homeless Solutions Christine Crossley explained, “Though intentions are good, street charity encourages people experiencing homelessness to remain on the streets rather than seek help from a homeless service provider… volunteering and or donating to the shelters is much more sustainable and beneficial for our residents’ housing needs.”

Donations to shelters help them maintain their services for those in need, especially during the winter. Shelters provide clothing, towels, pillows, blankets, and food to houseless individuals.

Additionally, they can also provide access to mental healthcare resources, guide people in their search for jobs or permanent housing, and assist domestic violence victims.

With the help of government assistance and generous donations from the public, shelters are able to provide meals for people without homes. Three meals a day, every single day, in fact.

Here is a list of service providers who assist those without homes in the DFW area.
